Thesis Lab empowers participants to jumpstart their writing projects and move them towards completion by providing them with the tools, time, space, motivation, and confidence to become more effective and self-assured writers. Each thesis lab consists of short lessons, group exercises, individual coaching and writing support, as well as hours of structured writing every day.

Not only do participants spend many hours writing, but they also learn to acknowledge and address the practical, intellectual, social and emotional issues that impact their unique writing processes. They thus become more productive writers even after the lab, better equipped to meet the goals and deadlines for completing their theses, dissertations and other academic writing projects.

Participants will learn how to:

  • get a lot of writing done in a short amount of time

  • analyze their own unique writing process, leverage their strengths and recognize and work on their weaknesses

  • recognize the essential elements of a good thesis and of effective academic writing

  • master strategies for effective writing that will benefit them in their future careers

  • employ tools to effectively organize their time and move them towards completion

  • reduce the stress, waste and anxiety that often accompany thesis writing

  • improve their quality of life, relationships and other work during the course of writing their thesis

Day One starts at lunchtime. Day Two is a full day. Day Three ends at lunchtime.

The workshop includes hours of structured writing time each day. There is a mix between individual work and work with partners, in small groups and as a large group. In addition, participants will receive inputs in the form of short lectures on important themes such as understanding their writing process, goal setting, time management, focus, thesis statements, and outlines. Djahane is on hand throughout the workshop in a breakout room to help with chapters, thesis plans, and writer’s block or to work through other problems with individuals or small groups on an “as needed“ basis. In other words, participants have access to one-on- one coaching to address specific areas where they are stuck or concerning which they need more input. Meetings after dinner are voluntary. They provide an opportunity to dive deeply into themes regarding the science of productivity, time management and other relevant issues.
