Question:
Prediction vs inference: how this question defines which statistical route to take
Inference is based on theory-deduced hypotheses and requires a scientifically thought-through model structure.
Causality and the problem of confounders and colliders becomes very important, so we'll invest some time in that.
For prediction, it is anarchy: no (or hardly any) rules - except how to validate a model. We will critically investigate the consequences of confusing the two avenues and work through examples that make clear that they are indeed mutually exclusive.
