Target Group:

PhD students at any stage of their PhD who

  • want to get feedback on a manuscript for a paper, grant proposal,  conference abstract  or alike and
  • want to train their peer reviewing skills

 

Frequence: Once per month, 09:00 -12:00

How does a Peer Review Session work? 

You will be matched with another PhD candidate and you will mutually review your manuscript. The reviewing and the feedback happen both during the session. There is nothing you have to do at home.

The Peer Review Session is an initiative from PhD candidates who participated in the Academic Writing Series and learned and practiced peer reviewing there. They found it so useful that they came up with the idea to establish monthly Peer Review Sessions for mutual support.

Why Peer Review Sessions?

  • Getting Feedback: Someone who is not involved in your project will look at your text with different eyes than you or close colleagues.
  • Giving Feedback: Giving feedback to a manuscript will help you to develop your evaluation and assessment skills and prepare you for future reviewing “jobs”. At the same time it will change the view on your own writing.
  • Non-scary environment: In each session we will introduce the participants to the basics of constructive feedback and provide a guideline for reviewing, including do´s and don´ts. A supportive atmosphere is essential for making the review sessions beneficial for both sides.
  • You can´t escape Peer Review: It´s good to make reviewing a natural part of your PhD before submitting a manuscript to a journal. 

 

Structure of a Peer Review Session

1)      Introduction of peers and guidelines,10 min
2)      Matching peers, 5  min
3)      Presenting text to partner and explain on, 20 min (2 x 10)
         which parts / aspects you wish feeedback                                    
4)      Reading and Editing, 60 min
             BREAK
5)      Feedback, 30 min (2 x 15)
6)      Reflection of benefits of exercise,15 min

7)      Closing round,10 min

 What do you need?

-          A draft or a section of a draft for review.
-          Your writing tools: Laptop/tablet (with charger!), pen and paper

-          To be open for receiving and giving constructive feedback
