Disputation Training

Target Group

PhD candidates aiming to defend their thesis within the next 12 months.

Content:

This workshop is designed to help advanced doctoral students prepare for their doctoral disputation. You will practice defending your dissertation through interactive role-play.

The session will help you:

• Understand and reflect upon the requirements and expectations for presenting your dissertation as part of the PhD defense
• Practice answering questions frequently asked by panel members
• Identify the elements of a successful disputation
• Based on the insights you gain by participating and/or observing the mock disputations, you will  identify the steps you need to take to prepare for your disputation
• Key outcomes of the session will be made available to you in writing after the event.

Teaching methods:

• Presentation
• Facilitated discussion
• Interactive roleplays, including a ‘mock PhD defense’
• Peer-to-peer observation and exchange.

What do you need to do to prepare?

We ask you to prepare a 15-min presentation or use a recent presentation summarizing your PhD research (can include preliminary results only) and be ready to present part of your dissertation using the presentation. Please send the presentation by October 16 to esther.muschelknautz@unr.uni-freiburg.de.
