Description

Writing well and prolifically is a crucial element of academic success. However, writing can cause a lot of anxiety, and many people falsely believe that writing is inborn talent. In this workshop, participants will learn step-by-step how to improve their writing process and the fundamentals of clear and compelling academic prose. Participants will also have the time to reflect on and improve their writing skills through hands-on exercises, discussions with their peers, and homework assignments.

After completing all four modules of the workshop, participants will be able to:

  • Understand their unique writing process and how to optimize it
  • Increase their writing productivity.
  • Manage common obstacles to writing such as procrastination, perfectionism, lack of motivation, writing anxiety, etc.
  • Increase the flow and cohesion of their writing; structure academic manuscripts (including tips for writing each section of a journal article).
  • Write with the reader in mind.
  • Write clearly and effectively in English by detecting and uprooting common writing mistakes.
  • Improve clarity and focus.
  • Revise and polish their work and give constructive and valuable edits to their peers and students.

Modules:

  1. Process What is my writing process? Where do I get stuck? How can I increase my writing productivity?
  2. Flow: How do I structure academic texts with the reader in mind? How do I increase the coherence and find the 'story' of my paper?
  3. Style What can I do to make my prose as clear and concise as possible? What are some common writing mistakes and how can I avoid these?
  4. Review  How do I revise my papers, and how can I give the best possible feedback to my peers and students when reviewing their work?

Participants are required to attend all four modules.
