This six-week online course provides you with the opportunity to discover, discuss and apply essential academic writing skills in a targeted manner. In turn, many of these skills and techniques can be applied to your ongoing writing projects in other settings. The course addresses the following writing skills: Structure, cohesion, and flow; paraphrasing and citing references; describing a study via explicit ‘moves’; commenting on data, hedging and boosting claims; discussing results and implications; peer feedback.

The sessions will help you:

  • Identify ‘violations‘ of academic writing ‘standards‘ and revise accordingly
  • Recognize, apply and enhance flow and cohesion in your writing
  • Identify and apply approaches to establishing your voice/position (citing literature, reporting verbs,  hedging, evaluative language)
  • Identify and apply structures in academic writing
  • Give peers constructive feedback on their writing (structure, critical perspective, style, accuracy)

Teaching methods:

  • Six-week online course (Zoom – sound and visual)
  • Wb-ILIAS course room
  • Presentation
  • Peer-to-peer exchange and constructive feedback
  • Facilitated discussions
  • Written tasks with instructor feedback
