For a doctoral student, their supervisor is often seen as the person who has the most influence on crucial aspects of their doctoral journey: the topic, the research design, the dissertation process, their integration into the academic community and in many cases their funding. On top of that, the supervisor evaluates the work at the end, which does not make the situation any easier.
Research has shown that a good student-supervisor relationship contributes to the candidate's productivity and mental well-being. On the other hand, miscommunication or lack of communication is often the cause of conflict, and, in the worst cases, leads to abandon their doctoral studies. The fact that the supervisor also evaluates the work at the end does not make the situation any easier.
Each supervisor is different, as is each doctoral student. Sometimes the working and communication styles match, sometimes they don’t. How can we deal with this?
To shed some light on the diversity of supervision styles or strategies we´d like to invite you to a panel discussion with four to five supervisors from our faculty.
The panelists will share their thoughts on the points below and then open the floor to the audience for discussion
- how they see the roles of supervisor and doctoral candidate
- their approach to “good supervision”
- common problems
- best practices
Moderator: to be announced soon

BARBECUE
After the discussion, there'll be a barbecue to help everyone unwind and have a relaxed chat about good supervision whatever other topic comes up!
