Who should come?

PhD candidates aiming to submit and defend their thesis within the next 12 months

This workshop is designed to help you plan for the PhD defense. It will allow you to prepare for your PhD defense through interactive role play formats where some of the participants will get to present and defend parts of their thesis. At the beginning Ms Silke de Boer from the examination office will give a short input about regulations and formal questions.

The session will help you:

  • Understand and reflect upon the requirements and expectations for presenting your thesis as part of the PhD defense
  • Gain experience in answering questions frequently asked by panel members
  • Learn about ingredients of a successful PhD defense by reflecting on your own preparation and by observing others in a mock PhD defense.
  • Key outcomes of the session will be made available to you in writing after the event.

Teaching methods:

  • Presentation
  • Facilitated discussion
  • Interactive roleplays, including a ‘mock PhD defense’
  • Peer-to-peer observation and exchange.

What should I prepare?

We ask you to prepare a presentation or use a recent presentation summarizing your PhD research (can include preliminary results only) and be ready to present part of your thesis using the presentation. Please send the presentation until September 24 to
