GS-Excursion 2011

A short report (Jakob):

On Friday morning we started in Freiburg to the Wallis in the southern Swiss Alps. Our first stop was the church in Loeche where we had a good view over the Rhone valley and a local forester talked about forest fires in the area and the Phynwald, which is a protected habitat for many plants and animals. In the early afternoon we arrived at the Chalet Ecole in Grimentz, our accommodation for the next two days. There we played a quite funny game to learn the names and the field of scientific activity of all group members.
The next morning Prof. Markus Weiler arrived and we walked to the Cabane de Moiry (2825 m a.s.l.) where we had a picnic and a very nice view over the Moiry glacier. The evening we spend with parlour games and chats in the chalet.
After Sunday morning breakfast and a short drive we walked into the Illgraben, the most active erosion basins in the Swiss Alps. After an exciting excursion we arrived Sunday evening in Freiburg.

Some comments:

Katerina: "I liked the excursion very much, mainly the trip on the glacier. It was for me for the first time that I could stand and walk on the surface of a glacier. And I really enjoyed it…"

Jakob: "We had beautiful weather the whole weekend. The vibe within the group was very nice and everyone had the chance to meet other members of the graduate school. For sure everyone will keep in mind good memories about this weekend."
